Harnessing the Power of Grassroots Leaders to Close the Gap Between Online and Offline Activism

Laura Ross-Perry, WiserEarth

Today, activists for social and environmental change inhabit two very different spheres. The first is the virtual sphere, where individuals from all over the world come together to think about broader issues and themes of global concern. The second is the physical world, where activists tackle local problems that are specific to their particular geographic and cultural contexts. Too often, the global online world and the local offline world work separately from one another. But contrary to popular belief, these two communities are not mutually exclusive. The question is not whether we can bridge this divide between the online and offline, but how. The bridge is the grassroots activist who works to solve local problems but who is also connected to the global movement for social change through online networks. It only takes one person to use the knowledge, connections, and resources that they find in the virtual sphere to inspire other individuals in their local community to action and catalyze concrete changes. In turn, their local efforts feed back into the online world, providing useful information to the international community as well as bringing new people into the global online discussion. Social networking platforms can serve as toolboxes and springboards, provide partnerships and collaborations, and empower the local grassroots leader. These individuals close the gap between the online and offline, and bring the global and local into a symbiotic relationship.
