Robert Girling--Sonoma State University and Bay Area Green Tours, Sonoma State University

The purpose of this workshop is to engage the participants in a discussion of ethics and sustainability in the Global Travel industry. Following brief presentations by the panel participants, the workshop will break into groups led by each of the panelists to consider the following issues and make recommendations to be published in the Travel industry’s leading magazines and distributed through social media. The questions that we will consider are: 1. How can we measure the positive and negative economic, environmental and cultural impacts of tourism? 2. How can tourism address the issue of economic leakage which reproduces poverty and the global divide between haves and have not’s? 3. What are the three most important considerations in building and managing a sustainable tourism facility or community? What are some examples of responsible and sustainable tourism locales? 4. What are the three most important considerations in traveling sustainably? 5. What is responsible ecotourism? How can its share of the global travel industry grow? 6. What are some innovative social enterprises doing to promote responsible tourism? What barriers have they overcome and what obstacles do they still face?
