The Art of Shipping
Martin Machado, Self
Having worked as an international merchant mariner for over a decade, I have seen first hand the faces behind our global economy. My art work reflects the realities of this somewhat hidden world that supplies 90% of goods on the marketplace. And while I love the maritime community and the personal international exchange that occurs through trade, the environmental impacts of industrial shipping are overwhelming. I hope that by presenting an installation of my artworks I can help to humanize the shipping industry and call out the environmental impacts of consumerism. In the near future I hope to create a dynamic event in which representatives from clean shipping operations, such as sail cargo, come together with inventive industrial designers to discuss the challenges of providing green shipping alternatives. In addition I'd like this event to have an arts exhibition and a marketplace element, in which food was delivered via sailing or clean energy vessels and unloaded on site. Perhaps by presenting my art I can create a dialogue to foster change.
