Tackling Investment Risks from Land Issues
Karina Kloos, Chris Jochnick, Landesa
The session would cover the issue of land rights in investments, including and particularly those aiming to be "responsible" or with "social impact." Land rights, especially women's land rights, are an often over-looked issue even while land is a fundamental economic, social, and political resource for the local communities from which most products are sourced. Discussion of fair trade coffee and renewable energy, for example, are quite common, but the underlying issue of land access, use and rights is rarely discussed in these settings. Landesa and its partners -- from advocacy organizations to corporations -- would aim to bring awareness to the key issue of land rights; present tools that investors can use to avoid, detect, and address land issues that may be present in their investments, including the supply chains of those they are investing in; and highlight how land is an anchor for women, men, and communities' livelihoods, and how land rights can help to achieve transformative development for these communities.
