Succession Planning for Social Enterprises

Camille Kerr, The National Center for Employee Ownership

When owners of a social enterprise are ready to move on, how can the company structure the transition preserve its values and promote its continued success? The conventional options are merger/acquisition, selling to a private equity firm, or in rare cases, going public. These may not be appropriate for a social purpose company, which has a heightened commitment to its stakeholders. This session offers alternative strategies such as employee ownership and also discusses how new corporate legal forms like the benefit corporation can help position companies to remain independent and continue to serve their social mission.
