Mobilizing Capital for Seed and Pre-VC Funds
Gregor Schueler, World Bank
Funds and investment companies that invest very early in the life cycle of start-ups - from seed to pre-series A - often face significant challenges in building viable fund models that can attract LPs and fund investors. These challenges include high risk levels of seed/early-stage portfolios - particularly in frontier markets and sectors - uncertain paths to exit, and high operating costs (pre- and post-investment). This panel of practitioners from emerging markets will discuss major pain points they experience and how they have innovated fund structure, business and operating models, and subsidy mechanisms to address them. The session will also highlight collaborative actions investors and field builders can take to mitigate these market constraints and catalyze greater and more appropriate capital to this segment.
