Leading from the South: African Investments in African Solutions & Opportunities for U.S. Philanthropic Investment
Yvonne L. Moore, Moore Philanthropy
Social innovations created and led by Africans are increasingly driving locally grown solutions and development on the Continent – a trend often overlooked in the narratives on Africa, and the conversations on aid, philanthropic giving and investments. However, the Continent continues to struggle with the legacy of colonialism, violent conflicts, the spread of radical Islam and poverty. These complex problems create ample opportunities for collaborations with partners from the U.S. and other parts of the world, committed to galvanizing resources in support of indigenous ideas. In 2017, Afrigrants, a donor advisory firm based in Lagos, Nigeria, in collaboration with Moore Philanthropy, Enabek Solutions USA, VC4Africa, Microsoft Nigeria and other partners, launched The Funding Space to begin the process of aggressively forging and leveraging partnerships, collaborations and investments. The goal is simple: to connect ideas to finance by drawing like-minded individuals and institutions from other parts of the world to African cities to invest in, and support social innovators throughout the Continent, in their unique countries and contexts.
