Transforming INGO business models: Role of market based solutions and Impact Investing
erika boll, Global Development Incubator
INGOs have started to explore market based business models and impact investing as one pathway to continue to achieve their missions. As more experiment with venture funds, setting up accelerator programs, and integrating innovation and social entrepreneurship into their core activities, the question of their role in the wider impact investment and international development communities has yet to be answered. This panel will explore three key themes related to INGOs role in impact investing. First, it will unpack the true assets of INGOs - such as government connections, regulatory understanding, knowledge of the BOP market, deep sector expertise (education, health, ag, etc), and insight into last mile distribution. It will surface cases of when assets have proven effective and when they haven’t. Second, the panel will explore operational questions like how to structure new vehicles and partnerships as well as how INGOs can work with impact investors and corporate partners to improve impact and business outcomes. Lastly, it will dissect pathways for the future of INGOs - how INGO assets can be leveraged for impact, and what needs to change - whether rooted in culture, partnerships, or other - to push the sector to a new level?
