Supporting sustainable SME development in emerging markets
Melwyn Dcosta, MaRS Centre for Impact Investing (MCII)
Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) account for over 95% of businesses worldwide and provide more than half of all jobs. According to World Bank Group research, the poorer the country, the greater the share of employment provided by SMEs. While these SMEs play a pivotal role driving sustainable development, they face many barriers that stifle their potential for lasting impact. Governments and private players have designed and implemented many approaches to stimulate the development and investment worthiness of the sector. This panel showcases four approaches focused at building a sustainable SME sector in the emerging markets: Grant Funding for ESG, Capacity building mentorship for SME fund managers, building sustainable entrepreneurial ecosystems and impact measurement to prove impact and improve performance.
