Leveraging technology to promote transformation of education systems around the world
Salah-Eddine Kandri, IFC - World Bank Group
Over the past decade the use of technology in the classroom has also moved from periphery to mainstream. By one popular estimate, the edtech market is expected to grow to $252bn by 2020 (17% per year). What is the reason for this? While education is a powerful driver of individual and national well-being, learners in many countries still struggle to acquire skills that can lead to future personal and professional success. This is especially troubling at a time when automation and skills-biased technological change will likely have an accelerated and more dramatic impact in the labor market compared to previous industrial revolutions. One of the promising approaches to help address this ‘learning crisis’ has been to introduce technologies in the classroom to boost learning outcomes. The edtech promise assumes that large and disruptive changes in education are possible, but so far changes in most countries have been incremental and there has not been a systematic effort to measure the impact on learning outcomes. This panel will focus on how learning technologies can aid a learning transformation at scale in education systems across the globe
