Innovations in financing development programs in low resource countries to achieve UN’s Sustainable Development Goals
Muska Ulhaq, MaRS Centre for Impact Investing
There is a significant need to find innovate ways to deploy capital in critical health and social issues in the development context, that goes beyond aid and grants, and incorporates results and performance-based financial returns. This panel will explore how developed countries can achieve the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, by showcasing the world's’ first anticipated health and nutrition Development Impact Bond. The Kangaroo Mother Care Development Impact Bond (KMC DIB), aims to improve health outcomes for low birth weight (LBW) and preterm infants by expanding access to Kangaroo Mother Care – an effective neonatal intervention –into hospital in up to 5 regions in Cameroon. Recognizing that low-birth-weight (LBW) and preterm births are among the leading causes of infant mortality globally, this DIB aims to expand access to the proven and cost-effective intervention of KMC to save and improve the lives of LWB and preterm infant in Cameroon where this challenge is particularly severe, and to positively impact their longer-term human capital development. The panelist will explore the opportunity and challenges of Development Impact Bonds to engage philanthropists and investors to scale innovative solutions in achieving the SDGs.
