Changing the Narrative for Women Entrepreneurs
Alice Gugelev, Global Development Incubator
Only 3% of companies backed with venture funding are run by women. What types of biases need to change for women entrepreneurs to gain access to capital? Why is it critical to support women entrepreneurs, especially in financial services, technology and clean energy? Barriers that limit investments in women entrepreneurs are linked not only to questions of capital, but to a host of issues from educational opportunities to biases against women executives. While new funds have recently begun supporting women entrepreneurs, there is limited progress. As part of reframing the narrative, it is important to consider how to move beyond “livelihood” interventions which only envision women as basket weavers or hair salon stylists. Through real talk between leading entrepreneurs and investors, this panel will discuss what it means to be a female entrepreneur/founder, the role of investors, and how the narrative changes across sectors, markets and the value chain.
