Bridging the Funding Gap and Opportunities for Cross-Border Impact Investors in China
The current social investing in China has mainly emerged from venture philanthropy by foundations and several foreign impact investors, and is a relatively small capital market under a fast-growing number of Social Purpose Organizations (SPO). Many Chinese social investing institutions are still in the stage of debating, learning, navigating, and trying this new funding approach. Thus, there exists a dearth of impact capital channeled into early-stage to high-growth SPO in China, whose capital needs exceed the dominated funding options of grants and debts. Bridging this funding gap requires not only investors’ willingness to wait for greater patience to realize their returns on investments but also collaboration among different investors and use hybrid finance. What are the current funding options? What are the approaches that can be adopted by investors, lenders, entrepreneurs and policymakers to bridge the funding gap? How do they collaborate? What are the success stories and lessons learned? How do SPO leverage different financing instruments? What are the key issues hampering SPO access to finance? What are the investment opportunities and entry barriers for cross-border impact investors? How to work around them and still make effective investments? This panel invites practitioners from foundation, impact investing institutions, and SPO to share their experience and insights.
