yeah jonathan, this middle way does require a new kind of thinking. seed stage investing is higher risk and lower financial return but more catalytic in its social impact. it's for the people who can think about their money and their meaning in one place without hurting their heads.

Kevin,
Brilliant article. My experience with this middle path is that it is still very hard for even the most visionary social investors to embrace this investment path. They are still wedded to philanthropy or return investing. Impact investing is still largely a subset of return investing.

I would love to hear more about your thinking on how to lead the culture changes necessary to bring more of the heavy hitters on board!

Sorry I won't be at SOCAP this year—y'all have created a great space.

This is actually inspiring - thank you, authors. You've articulated a coherent position that conveys how we need to be able to focus simultaneously on different pieces of the transformation in progress. This is helpful to me in knowing how to talk about what I already believe in.

Thank you too for highlighting how few seed funds there are that actually put money into social enterprises at the early stage. It's probably the least interesting issue in all of the things in this piece, but it's a reality that is slowing our collective learning as well as the launch or growth of many promising projects.

Well said! The grandfather's market concept reminds me of a great expression my own grandfather used to say, "money is like manure; it should be spread around to make things grow."
